FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY

What is birth photography?
Birth photography is way to capture the first moments of your baby’s arrival as well as you & your partner’s emotions.

I would like to meet you before hiring you to make sure I am comfortable with you. Is that possible?
Absolutely! Birth photography is very intimate & each session includes a pre-birth consultation where we will discuss any & all thoughts & concerns you have as well as anything in particular you want me to focus on & capture.

When should I book my session?
Clients typically book as soon as they have confirmed their pregnancy with their care provider. Because I take only a limited number of birth clients each month, it ensures that my birth clients are booked for their due month.

Are the images you take revealing?
No. I am very careful with the angles I shoot from so that the photos are not revealing but still capture the process.

Do I have a say in what images you show?
Yes! With birth stories I do ask approval from you for all blog posts or any marketing material. I will not show any image unless you have given me full permission to do so.

What exactly do you photograph?
Each birth is uniquely different. I am essentially there to document what is actually happening. We can discuss more in detail in our initial meeting what you would like to include.

When my labor starts, when should I call you?
Immediately. You can call or text me to give me a heads up.

Once I’m in labor, when will you come to begin photographing?
I try to get there when you are in "active" labor  to allow sufficient time to capture you in labor and for me to be there and prepared for the baby’s arrival. Again, each mom/birth is unique and we will discuss all of the details in our initial meeting.

What if I go into labor in the middle of the night?
Call me.  Even if the contractions are mild, by giving me the notice it helps to ensure I will make it in sufficient time.

How long are you on call?
I am on call beginning 2 weeks before your due date and will remain on call until the baby is born.

What if I go into labor before you are officially on call?
Call me! I will do everything I can to get there.

What if you don’t make it to the birth?
If I am notified once you start labor and am updated throughout early labor and I do not make it at no fault of yours, you will receive a full refund of any monies paid to that date. However, if you do not notify me that your labor has started and do not call until it is too late for me to arrive in time to capture the birth, the birth session fee is non-refundable. I will still come as soon as possible and begin photographing those first moments after baby has arrived and stay for an extended post-delivery session.

How long will you stay at the birth?
Typically I will stay from the time I arrive until one hour past delivery.

Do you interact during the birth session?
Yes and no. It is completely up to the mom in labor. I can be completely quiet & not utter a word or we can have conversation between contractions. It’s totally up to you!

What about c-sections?
If your birth ends up in c-section, I will go into the OR (with permission from your care provider.) If I am not allowed in the OR, I will continue photographing as soon as you & the baby come back to the room/nursery & continue the session as normal.

How far with you travel?
I will travel up to 30 minutes from Seattle, Washington.

Do you use a flash?
No. I try to make myself as inconspicuous as possible.

* Note: without the use of flash, sometimes the images may have a little grain in them due to the low light situations.

Will my images be in black and white or color?
Typically most of the birth images are edited in black &  white. This is due to the lighting in the hospital which tends to be low. Occasionally, there are a few shots that I will edit in color.

What do you charge?
Birth stories begin at $1,000. Contact me for more information.

Is the deposit refundable?
Because of the limited number of birth clients I accept each month, the deposit (& any fees paid to date) is non-refundable. However, you may apply the money paid to a maternity or newborn session.

*Note: In the unfortunate event of a miscarriage, your fees will be refunded.

Do you offer a payment plan?
A $300 deposit is required to book the month of your due date. You can then pay the balance as you wish (weekly, monthly, etc.) but the remaining fee must be paid in full by 4 weeks before your due date.

Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes! If you would like to give the gift of a birth story please contact me
